Oakland, CA, May 30, 2006 – On Saturday, June 24, St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County will present the 2006 Re-Fresh Festival, a community celebration of creative reuse and recycling. Co-sponsored by Habitat for Humanity East Bay and The ReUse People, the family-friendly event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
The event will feature arts and crafts by eco-friendly artisans, interactive reuse art activities for children, live music and even a fashion show that will display designer outfits made from salvaged items. Key attractions include St. Vincent de Paul’s two artists-in-residence, who will open their studio to display art pieces created from the organization’s unused thrift store donations. Also, local artist Hugh Livingston will unveil his “Re-Sound” exhibit, a sound installation created from deconstructed windows that were originally part of a historical site in Oakland.
Live entertainment will be provided by “Haute Trash”, a group of women artists who produce runway fashion shows made from society’s trash. Local band Shotwell 25 will perform African and Latin-based world-jazz-funk-hoop dance music.
The Re-Fresh Festival will be held at St. Vincent de Paul’s headquarters at 9235 San Leandro Street in Oakland – a site that is quickly emerging “reuse shopping center”. Current reuse retailers include St. Vincent de Paul’s Outlet Store which sells donations of gently used clothing, furniture and household items; Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, a discount buildings material reuse outlet; and the ReUse People’s ReUse Bazaar which sells materials and appliances from deconstructed buildings.
Parking space is available at the event, but car-pooling is recommended. Admission is free. For additional information on the Re-Fresh Festival, call (510) 638-7600 or visit www.svdp-alameda.org.
