The SVdP Community Center borders downtown and West Oakland and is a safe and welcoming space for a community mired in poverty and struggling to move forward as redevelopment efforts explode in surrounding blocks. The center, home to SVdP’s Special Works programs, is open to community groups as a safe, low-cost space for vital programs and events.
As an example, Narcotics Anonymous groups meet at the center weekly, providing an atmosphere of recovery where people share their common problem and exchange solutions to build healthy lives. The NA meetings at the center are among the largest in the Bay Area.
The public space has also been used by community groups, such as the San Pablo Corridor Coalition in West Oakland.
