St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County Receives $15,000 Grant from the UPS Foundation

March 17, 2005 - Oakland , CA - The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County received a $15,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS.  The grant will be used to support commercial grade kitchen equipment for St. Vincent de Paul's Free Dining Room.

The St. Vincent de Paul Free Dining Room provides free lunch to homeless and low income individuals and families in West Oakland. Nearly 1,000 meals are served daily, 400,000 annually.  In addition, the Dining Room provides meals to satellite facilities throughout the county.  These satellites offer a variety of social services to their communities, yet do not have the resources to prepare meals for those who utilize their services.

"The UPS grant is truly a blessing for us.  It couldn't have come at a better time," states Ron Smith Dining Room Manager.  "Much of our equipment is inoperable, so the grant is very much needed to replace equipment in order for us to maintain our ability to help our guests."  Smith also states that he loves having UPS employees volunteer at the Free Dining Room. "They are a warm, friendly and gracious group, who love working with our guests."
