Come for Help, Leave with Love
St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda is one of the largest Emergency shelters in Alameda county, open 365 days a year. Our staff and volunteers in our free dining room and community center are dedicated to providing warm meals and supplementary programs for our unhoused/housing insecure, food insecure, and impoverished neighbors in Oakland.
Embracing an attitude of gratitude can transform a life.
We are grateful for the volunteers and donors who help our community every day.

OUr history
The International Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20-year-old student at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Challenged to "practice what they preach," Frederic and a group of fellow students sought out the poor in Paris and brought them bread, clothing and most importantly, friendship. Similar groups began forming throughout the world including the United States. The first St. Vincent de Paul Conference of Alameda County in Oakland was active from 1882 to 1892. The current Council of Alameda County was established in 1938.

Our Mission & Values
The mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is “a network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.”
We invite people of all backgrounds and creeds to join our team of dedicated staff and volunteers to help us meet our goals of providing essential support to our neighbors who are homeless, housing insecure, food insecure, or living in poverty. By providing food, clothing, and job training assistance, we can offer individuals in need a helping hand. |
The Vincentians today
The National Council of the United States Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a network of charity organizations with over 800,000 members. In Alameda County, SVdP is represented within a Catholic parish called a Conference. Members, known as Vincentians, serve those in need in their neighborhoods by collecting and distributing funds for eviction prevention, utility bills, and medical costs; providing clothing and furniture; and stocking church food pantries. Today, over 800 Vincentian volunteers, across 37 parishes in Alameda County, provide assistance for over 100,000 people a year. For more information on your nearest Conference, or for emergency resource referrals call 510-638-7600.

Our Work |
What's Happening Now |
"St. Vincent de Paul helped me with my kids and with the domestic violence that I had been dealing with. They helped me get information on organizations to help me get to a safe house.
I don’t know what would’ve happened to me and my children without St. Vincent." |
St. Vincent de Paul provides those in need with hot meals, job training assistance, and respite from life on the street. |
We continue to offer hot, nutritious take-away meals and services (e.g., laundry, clothing, showers) through our drop-in centers. Our job training program is still up and running.
